Description
The Process Safety Engineer supports Praxair's operations and engineering teams with direct responsibility for coordinating process safety efforts at Praxair facilities\. Through close interaction with safety and environmental groups, plant operations, process engineering, project engineering, reliability engineering, maintenance and inspection, and regional administrative and business teams, this position provides technical expertise and leadership in all aspects of process safety\.
The overall objective of the Process Safety Engineer is to promote a strong process safety culture by providing process safety expertise and ensuring that management systems are established and effectively used to maintain compliance\.
Essential Functions
+ Is acutely aware of the highest risk issues and relentlessly drives resolution with a strong sense of urgency and integrity\. Champions and promotes a strong process safety culture\.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills\. Prepares and organizes written presentations, documentation and reports pertaining to process safety activities\.
+ Identifies process safety improvement opportunities through interaction with all process safety stakeholders\. Makes recommendations and justifies new tools and work process improvements\.
+ Ensures that process safety\-related Standard Maintenance Procedures \(SMPs\), Standard Operating Procedures \(SOPs\), engineering standards and guidelines are developed, reviewed, and updated as needed\.
+ Participates in Process Hazard Analyses \(PHAs\) as a facilitator when necessary and maintains the qualifications of a PHA facilitator\. Reviews PHAs to ensure consistency with company policy and tracks recommendations\. Stewards PHA action items to closure\.
+ Participates in key incident investigations and maintains the qualifications of a Root Cause Analysis \(RCA\) facilitator\. Stewards RCA action items to closure\.
+ Participates in key Pre\-Startup Safety Reviews \(PSSR\)
+ Participates in process safety audits / assessments\.
+ Assists in the development and delivery of process safety training\.
+ Supports the Electronic Management of Change \(eMOC\) process by ensuring that management systems are in place and effective\. Provides technical review and approval of specific MOCs in accordance with company policy\.
+ Routinely reviews Process Safety Event \(PSE\) reports and interprets event tier levels in accordance with CCPS and API recommended practices\. Follows up to ensure that investigations and action plans are complete and that key lessons are shared throughout the organization\. Reports process safety metrics accordingly\.
+ Assists with the compilation, organization and updating of Process Safety Information \(PSI\) as needed to support compliance with all process safety elements
Qualifications
99. An M\.S\. or B\.S\. degree in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Safety Engineering or Process Safety Related Field\.
99. Five \(5\) years experience in a process safety engineering or leadership role\. An additional five \(5\) years experience in an operating facility working in an operations and or engineering support role of an OSHA PSM covered process in the industrial gas, refining or chemical industry\.
99. Knowledge of various Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices \(RAGAGEP\) related to process safety\.
Preferred Qualifications, Key Skills and Attributes
99. Five \(5\) years of experience as a Process Engineer supporting an operating facility in the process industry\.
99. Qualified Process Hazard Analysis \(PHA\) Facilitator with three \(3\) years of experience conducting a minimum of 3 PHA?s per year\. Familiar with Facility Siting and Human Factors requirements\.
99. Familiar with the many forms of Process Safety Information \(PSI\), how PSI is used in operating facilities, and how it should be maintained\.
99. Familiar with Critical Safety Systems \(CSS\), Safety Instrumented Systems \(SIS\), Safety Integrity Levels \(SIL\), and Layers of Protection Analysis \(LOPA\)\.
99. Able and willing to analyze and understand process safety incidents within industry to identify opportunities for improvement within Praxair\.
99. An understanding of relief systems, and how their entire life cycle is critical to process safety\. Experience with design of relief systems is preferred\.
99. An understanding of Management of Change \(MOC\) and its potential impact on process safety\.
99. An understanding of Pre\-Startup Safety Reviews \(PSSR\) and how and when they are conducted\. Willingness to actively participate in PSSRs, especially for large capital projects\.
99. An understanding of the Operating Procedures required in process operations\.
99. An understanding of Mechanical Integrity, the basic elements of a mechanical integrity program, and how this program supports process safety\.
99. Familiar with EPA's Risk Management Program \(RMP\)\.
99. Familiar with Alarm Management\.
99. An understanding of how dispersion, fire and explosion modeling is used\.
99. Able and willing to stay up\-to\-date with local, state and federal regulations that apply to facilities within Praxair\.
99. Able and willing to promote a strong process safety culture where attitudes and behaviors support the goal of safer process operations\.
99. Has a positive attitude, is willing to quickly adapt to changing situations, has strong communications skills, and a strong will to build and maintain productive relationships across departmental lines in a matrix organization\.
99. Experience with incident investigations and the ability to facilitate Root Cause Analyses\.
99. Ability to lead and participate in cross\-functional teams\.
99. Able to manage multiple priorities, drive issues to completion, and obtain results\.
99. Detail\-oriented with an ability and desire to persevere\.
99. Proficient in the use of Lotus Notes, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint\.
99. Able and willing to travel to supported facilities and offices in various regions\.
99. Experience with using Six Sigma techniques\.
99. Flexible and willing to travel globally as necessitated by future business needs\.
Location: Various Locations Considered
This position requires approximately 35 \- 45% travel\.
