An essential part of identifying or developing effective chemical solutions is to first understand the physical application and customer goal.
Rather than be confined to performing routine data collection, our lab technician will learn how to create and conduct strategic test methods that simulate real-world cleaning and treatment processes.
They will learn functionality of various types of equipment, become familiar with chemical/material compatibilities, and understand how to balance product performance data with economics.
DUTIES &
Responsibilities:
- Create and conduct lab test procedures to measure, document, and analyze chemical effectiveness for industrial cleaning and water treatment applications.
- Use lab data to determine chemical or physical characteristics.
- Use lab data to develop and communicate product recommendations and dosage rates.
- Expand knowledge of chemical ingredients by meeting with vendor chemists and conducting proactive online research.
- Determine ways to improve existing blend formulations.
- Follow directions and be proactive - Collect field samples and provide field testing as needed - Conduct regular water testing on customer boiler systems.
- Use data to draw conclusions and make recommendations to improve boiler water conditions.
- Install and maintain chemical metering pumps for boiler and wastewater treatment systems.
- Conduct wastewater jar tests to determine chemical and dosage recommendations.
- Perform basic analytical tests from well-defined standards and procedures as assigned by manager - Conduct QC testing for batch blends while managing batch sample inventory.
- Manage batch number tracking for all blended products.
- Manage raw chemical sample inventory for lab testing purposes.
- Manage customer sample inventory.
- Manage lab waste according to EPA regulations.
- Attend training and pass appropriate examinations in hazcom, hazardous materials disposal, and other safety and compliance training required by applicable regulations - be able to wear and use appropriate protective equipment, including respiratory protective equipment, as may be required by the work environment - Use and maintain lab equipment and manage lab supplies
Qualifications:
EDUCATION - High School Diploma Required.
- Minimum Associates Degree Required.
- Bachelors degree in chemistry or math-science preferred.
EXPERIENCE - 2
years of work experience in lab post-college.
LABORATORY SKILLS & ETIQUETTE - Maintain a clean work space - Ability to prepare chemical solutions according to standard formulas - Collect and record liquid and dry chemical measurements with precision and accuracy - Safely perform routine and non-routine laboratory tests with or without supervision COMMUNICATION SKILLS - Ability to read, analyze and interpret instructional and technical materials relating to procedures and safety; and applicable government regulations.
- Ability to write applicable reports and correspondence clearly.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and clients.
PHYSICAL - Be able to work in the presence of odors typical of petroleum or petrochemicals without allergic reactions or nausea - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear; and test or smell - The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
- Pass the drug and alcohol test specified for safety-sensitive employees MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent, and quantities (linear, volumetric, or weight) and to read and interpolate applicable data and tables.
- Able to draw and interpret applicable graphs and control charts.
- Proficiency with mass and volume unit conversions REASONING ABILITY - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
